 Join us at Gardening Leave, Erskine and Parklea, Port Glasgow.
  9.15am  to 3.30,  Free transport and entry, Lunch available for £5/bring your own
About the day: A mini bus will leave from Glasgow (the drop off/taxi bay in Buchanan St Bus Station) at 9.30am. 

  • Our first visit will be to Gardening Leave, a new project at Erskine Hospital, based in the ‘old’ garden centre. Here veterans are offered a wide variety of gardening tasks and activities to improve their mental and physical wellbeing.
  • We will then visit Parklea Branching Out, a charitable organisation based in Port Glasgow.  Here, individuals and groups with disabilities and mental health issues can experience horticultural training, skills development and therapeutic opportunities within a supportive and friendly environment.
  • The third section of the day will provide opportunities for discussion/sharing experiences/your questions and ideas.

        with Olivia Hanley from The Scottish Community Development Centre Venue: Gorgie City Farm, 51, Gorgie Road, Edinburgh EH11 2LA Olivia works for both the Scottish Community Development Centre (SCDC) and the Community Health Exchange (CHEX) from where she provides a range of training, support to networks, practice development and information to do with community engagement and community-led health. Olivia is also involved, on a voluntary basis, with a community garden in her own community. This one day course aims to be practical in nature and equip you to feel more confident about engaging with your community either to help to set up a community garden or sustain an existing one. The training will be participative and will draw on the experiences of the participants and on case studies, in thinking about how to reach and engage with groups and individuals in your communities some of whom may be considered ‘hard to reach’.         Gardening For All - Developing Ideas to make Gardening more Inclusive and Accessible,. With John Smith from Botanica Consult at Redhall Walled Garden, 97 Lanark Road, Edinburgh, EH14 6LH. Have you ever felt unsure about how to adapt a gardening activity or tool for people with complex needs? Have you had someone new attend your project but been unsure about how to adapt activities to meet their needs? This training course will provide ideas for assessing the needs for those who want to attend your project and adapting the project to meet those needs. E.g. how to make the garden area more accessible for people with physical disabilities; how to make gardening concepts interesting and accessible for people with literacy problems.
        Course Content - this day course is an opportunity to get some ideas about:
        • Communication and how people learn
        • Internal and external work environment (adapting/developing garden work areas)
        • Adapting work techniques and tools
        • Recognition through education. (What awards are available and suitability)
        Background of Trainer - John Smith has worked for many years as a College lecturer in Horticulture and Landscape Design, teaching mainstream horticultural and landscape students. For the last ten years he has developed a Therapeutic model of gardening in conjunction with the Royal Caledonian Horticultural Society at Suntrap for students with learning difficulties and other complex needs.

        Come along and support Suntrap Garden
        Suntrap Garden Annual Open Day on Sunday 22 May from 10.30 am to 4.00 pm.
        There will be tours of the garden, plant sales, garden advice and demonstrations.
        There will also be fun activities for the children such as gardening activities, face painting and Eubee the Snowy Owl. Admission is £3 for adults and children are free, there is also free car parking.
        The big change this year that all funds raised will go to the Friends of Suntrap to help them maintain the garden and to continue the fight to keep the garden open.

        Redhall Walled Garden will be having an open day on Sunday 26th June (12-5pm) - a very relaxed family day with fancy dress fun for children - see below.
        Entry to this event is free but donations will be gratefully accepted and all proceeds go to support the work of the garden (a SAMH mental health support service).
        This is a day for people who love gardens and want a relaxed day in beautiful surroundings with fun activities for children. The18th century garden has lovely walkways and is of considerable historical interest.
        We will include:
        Selling a large collection of annual bedding, herbaceous perennials, and shrubs - great Summer offers (we also sell compost and woodchip).
        Running guided tours featuring the history of this 18th century walled garden, and behind the scenes in the greenhouses and tunnels.
        A chance to meet the manager and find out about the work we do to support people who are recovering from mental health problems and how being in a garden can make us all feel better! Our famous cream teas.
        Take part in our fancy dress competition - categories are flowers, fruit, fantasy, fairy tale characters.
        Music from our resident musicians.

        The conference will focus on recent research into the design and provision of accessible outdoor environments for everyone – people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities.  It will highlight the importance of inclusive environments in improving the quality of life of individuals at different life stages and explore the links between the design and planning of communities – both urban and rural – and enhanced health and wellbeing.
