Gardening at Holyrood - this week's (3rd-7th Sept) Parliamentary business includes a question of potential interest to gardening projects: Health and Social Care – role of voluntary organizations: Iain Gray - To ask the Scottish Executive what plans it has to develop the role of voluntary organisations in supporting vulnerable and older people in their communities. (S3O-484)
Let's see how this debate develops. Also this week Alex Salmond announced the new legislative programme. The Public Health (Scotland) Bill will modernise public health legislation; and strengthen the role of health boards. But the First Minister also stated: "not...every problem......can or should be resolved through legislation". Accordingly, there were references to on-going work that does not require legislation including:-
- skills and learning strategy
- improving efforts to tackle drugs related problems
- development of a comprehensive health strategy.
Indications of future consultations included:- Climate Change Bill. As gardening projects have a positive impact on environment and climate, the network could make a useful contribution to this consultation.
Trellis will represent the therapeutic gardening network at Parliament on 13th September at an event organised by SAGS, the Scottish Alloment Gardens Society, during Scottish Food Fortnight.

The Trellis stall was within the Garden For Life 'Living Garden' area at Gardening Scotland, 1st-3rd June 2007. Around 500 people visited our stall and our demonstration of adaptive gardening techniques. Our patron, Jim McColl also surrendered his microphone in the Beechgrove Theatre Tent so that we could promote therapeutic gardening and Trellis to the audiences there.
