Welcome to our Summer newsletter. This summer, our gardens have been buzzing with activity. From raising vibrant flowers and nurturing vegetables to sharing our Sensory Garden Live Demo series online, we've cultivated an environment that promotes therapeutic horticulture and all its benefits.

It's been a busy few months here at Trellis HQ. We've hosted, attended and presented at a variety of events both online and in person, sharing knowledge and best practice. 

In this update, we're sharing some highlights of the Summer season and looking forward to a busy Autumn.

World Therapeutic Horticulture Day 2024
 

The second World Therapeutic Horticulture Day took place on 18 May. This year our reach increased considerably with several more countries taking part and promoting therapeutic horticulture and the work they are doing. The date coincided with the Therapeutic Horticulture Australia conference, and this gave a boost to promotion with a gathering of focused and enthusiastic practitioners sharing images and impressions from their event, linking it to WTHD, long before we started our day in the UK.

In the run up to WTD, we enjoyed an inspiring presentation from Georg Hoefer on 'Germany & Kenya: Social Landscaping - a win for everyone.' He discussed the experiences of his team with their Social Landscaping projects and what they bring to the personal development of people involved.

World day itself was filled with videos and discussion including CEO of Trellis, Fiona joining Mark and Helen on BBC Radio Scotland’s 'Out of Doors' show to discuss and celebrate World Therapeutic Horticultural Day.

International People Plant Symposium 2024

In July, Fiona presented at the Symposium in Reading to discuss 'Growing a global network to help therapeutic horticulture groups flourish', highlighting the success and importance of World Therapeutic Horticulture Day. 

An international line-up of speakers and attendees exchanged ideas and were all focused on the common goal of promoting therapeutic horticulture. Everyone in the audience committed to further raising the profile of World Therapeutic Horticulture Day next year. 
British Association of Social Work

Emma, our Training and Standards Officer and Fieldworker, presented at BASW Conference in Edinburgh this summer, alongside Autumn Roesch-Marsh of Edinburgh University. They discussed "Therapeutic gardening and nature connection: incorporating plants, gardens, and greenspaces into social work practice." at the conference in June and ran an interactive outdoor session for delegates. The Conference gave Emma a great opportunity to share the work of Trellis and further promote how therapeutic gardening can play a key role within social work.

Link Workers Conference

The Link Workers Conference was held in Glasgow at the end of May. The event was a great opportunity for Link Workers across Scotland to come together to connect, share, learn and network. Jenny and Joan attended on behalf of Trellis to make delegates aware of the therapeutic horticulture projects in their area and the benefits they can offer to patients. Joan and Jenny ran a workshop on the Japanese flower printing art of Hapa Zome. Their flower display made quite the impact!

Italy calling

Back in May, Fiona was the keynote speaker at the Hortus Medicus seminar at the University of Milan Faculty of Agriculture, talking about therapeutic horticulture and well-being and Trellis’ work to win recognition for the transformational outcomes of gardening projects in our network and around the world.

The audience were inspired and encouraged to hear about our work here in Scotland and Fiona learned a lot from the other presentations, about therapeutic horticulture programmes across Italy and in Ukraine, from groups specialising in autism, Alzheimer’s and in neuropsychiatric care for children. Another co-presenter was Ania Balducci, friend of Trellis, Seminar Series presenter and founder of the Masters in Horticulture Therapy at Bologna Alma Mater University. Thanks to Professor Giulio Senes for organising such a productive exchange of good practice and research.

Autism Awareness & Gardening Event

Green Routes - 1.00pm to 3.00pm 
Gillian and her team have generously opened the doors of Green Routes, Gargunnock to share their experiences and good practice with us. There will be lunch and a Garden Tour with the student gardeners and staff. This is an opportunity to meet the young people supported by Green Routes, many with varying degrees of autism, and gain an understanding of their experiences of gardening at the project.

Networking event

Our latest in-person networking event took place in Pittencrieff Park. Although it was a rather damp day, everyone thoroughly enjoyed the tour by Friends of Pittencrieff Park and the opportunity to catch up with colleagues from a variety of sectors.

Our next in-person networking takes place in Dunfermline at The Haven Garden at Queen Margaret Hospital in Dunfermline.

The Haven Garden was established 6 years ago and is the creation of a community group (registered charity) run by an enthusiastic team of volunteers which provides a vital, green oasis for patients, visitors and staff to use day and night. 

If you are interested in establishing a garden in a hospital setting or looking for inspiration in developing a therapeutic garden space, please do come along.

Sensory Garden Series Workshops

Joan, Project Advisor for Trellis, has been running a series of workshops for both Ayrshire Cancer Support and Alzheimer’s Scotland. Most recently, she was creating Summer baskets with a group in Ayrshire and herb planters with Alzheimer’s Scotland in Glasgow. 

More workshop sessions are planned for the Autumn with both charities.
