John's involvement in voluntary work started in the mid 1960s when he opted out of school sports at UCS to spend Tuesday afternoons at St. Thomas' Hospital, London and over the years has included executive roles in the late 1980s in Scotland with Children's Liver Disease Foundation, in mid 1990s as Secretary and Treasurer of Royal Caledonian Horticultural Society, being a regular since 1988 with the stewarding team at the Church of Scotland's General Assembly, a volunteer in Pilton Community Thrift Shop, local church link person to Fresh Start, and over forty five years as one of the mainstays of Blackhall Horticultural Society. Since 2014 John has had input into the work of Keep Scotland Beautiful with whom he is a Green Flag Award judge (for parks & greenspaces), a Beautiful Scotland judge, and a mentor for the It's Your Neighbourhood linking up with over twenty five groups per year.
