Social Enterprise for Community and Therapeutic Gardens

10am – 4pm with Shona Maguire from SEAM at Govanhill Housing Association, Samaritan House,79 Coplaw Street,Glasgow, G42 7JG.
Shona has a degree in Business Communication, and experience of working in a range ofprivate sector SMEs before migrating to work in the voluntary sector. The training will include Case Studies and examples of good practise and covers:
- What is Social Enterprise - Definitions of social enterprise - Different models - examples of each (CIC, Ltd Company & Charity, SCIO, etc) - What are the issues/difficulties?
- Site Visit and Ideas Generation – a walk to a couple of GREAT Gardens sites.
- Is social enterprise right for you? – look at other models of operation and income generation e.g. if you just need to make some money from your project. Generating income does not mean that you are a social enterprise. - SWOT Analysis Growing Communities in Scotland Supporting Scotland’s therapeutic, community and allotment gardens

Urban Roots, Glasgow - Basic Cookery Skills

Urban Roots, Glasgow - Grow Your Own course at the Nan McKay Hall in Pollokshields. This 8 week course covers all the basics of designing your growing space to saving your seeds (and everything in between). Again, free but limited places. On 10th March Urban Roots Glasgow are collaborating with others to bring you Queens Park Orchard Care Day, when we'll be pruning, staking, guarding and mulching - and generally taking the opportunity to chat about orchards. Join us at 10am at the Victoria Road entrance, or catch up with us later on in the orchard near the duckpond.
Urban Roots, Glasgow - Malls Mire Community Woodland, Glasgow
The year started with a Prince's Trust community project in Malls Mire Community Woodland, who helped us organise a big litter pick and clean up that focussed on the Rutherglen end of the woods. On Thursday 12th a team of 10 went out, and later that same day South Lanarkshire Council collected 5 van loads of rubbish. The next few weeks will involve coppicing and pathway maintenance - and dealing with some wind blown trees! Regular team out as usual ever Thursday 11am - 3pm, new members always welcome.
We're running a 2 day Living Willow Structures workshop on 18th and 19th February. The course will cover basic willow structure design such as domes and tunnels, and will move onto more complicated structures such as chairs. Urban Roots, Glasgow- Sustainable Travel
Earlier this year we heard we were successful recipients of funding from the Cycling Scotland Sustainable Communities Fund. This will support Cycle Trainer Training, Bike Mechanics Training - and delivery of some workshops throughout the year.
We're offering 8 places on Cycle Trainer Training - a 4 day course that will train you up to deliver Cycling with Confidence courses. A proviso of taking a free place on the course is that you then deliver a 4 session CwC workshop for us at some point in the year. Provisional dates for the course are12th, 13th, 19th & 20th March. If you're interested in this please get in touch. Note - you MUST already be a confident road cyclist to become a trainer.

Urban Roots, Glasgow - Energy
We've got our winter fuel poverty and energy awareness campaign running just now, with a team of energy volunteers surveying local people on their energy consumption, and advising on ways to cut energy costs in the home. If you'd like to join this team we meet up on a Monday from 10.30am, in our office the Toryglen Community Base. We'll have a stall at Asda on January 30th to come and help us with that.
We're collaborating with Transition Glasgow and Woodland Community Garden to bring you DIY Draught Busting Workshops. DIY Draught Busting Workshops help you the resident to help yourself stay toasty indoors when its so cold out. Free, easy to learn, install and fun to share with others, these are skills and £ that can pay you back in 1 winter season! Skills to learn include windows, doors (front, back and patio), radiator reflectors and loads of other top tips. Window fittings are suitable for sash/casement windows. Free, but with a £10 returnable deposit - limited places.
Workshops are on Wednesday 25th January 3pm-6pm (Southside, venue tbc), and Wednesday 1st February 6pm-9pm (Westend, venue tbc)

Urban Roots, Glasgow- Low Impact Living
Earlier in January we heard we had been successful with our Zero Waste Scotland funding application. This has given us the flexibility to run workshops in composting, food waste, creative re-use and green housekeeping. Fantastic news we're sure you'll agree. Dates to be confirmed - keep a lookout if you're interested in any of those topics.
In the meantime we can offer you Your Money, Your Planet - our free, popular 6 session course that looks at all thinks climate friendly. Fun, interactive, thought provoking and inspiring, we'll cover climate change (cause and effect), food, energy, travel, waste and consumption. Find easy ways to reduce your carbon footprint without breaking the bank. YMYP runs every Tuesday from 7th February, 6pm - 8pm. Venue tbc, Toryglen or Battlefield.
For those looking for a bit more insight into the world of sustainable lifestyles, we have a couple of places left on the internationally recognised Permaculture Design Course. In depth study of design concepts and practical elements make this ideal for anyone really wanting to transform their lives. Taught over 5 weekends, on the first weekend of each month from February 4th & 5th, to June 2nd & 3rd at the Toryglen Community Base, the course is fee paying on an affordable sliding scale. Mental Health First Aid Training
Scotland’s mental health first aid is a 12 hour training course to teach you to give initial help to someone experiencing a mental health problem,deal with a crisis situation or the first signs of someone developing mental ill healthand guide people towards appropriate professional help.
