Germany - A basic therapeutic necessity
Andreas Niepel works at the VAMED Clinic in Hattingen, with patients with neurological disorders.
‘A basic therapeutic necessity: promoting mental health as a goal of garden therapy, especially to counteract the harmful effects of a closed space within a neurological clinic. Exploring fundamental aspects of this approach and possibilities for implementation.’
Andreas will share how garden therapy is used at VAMED to promote mental health for adults and young people with neurocognitive disorders, some treated in a closed setting. The focus will be on how such a general sounding goal can be achieved through a very specific intervention, and the role garden therapy plays in a multi-disciplinary team. We will learn how gardening activities become a basic therapeutic necessity to counteract the harmful effects of being in a closed ward, and how through gardening and nature we learn to embrace imperfection and uncertainty.
