A simple project for anytime of the year but particularly well-suited for January.
Make good use of discarded Christmas tree foliage and evergreen trimmings from your garden. Create a bird feeder with a ‘bower’ to provide shelter as well as feeding garden birds. Benefits of engaging in this activity includes practicing fine motor skills, increased job satisfaction and self-esteem, as well as a greater awareness of wildlife needs.

Simplify this activity for people with cognitive impairment or a need to reduce mental fatigue, by :
• Pre-tying bunches of greenery for them to attach to the bower branch.
• Set up ‘working with a buddy’ to share the tasks. Each person can work to their skills and strengths.
• Create an ‘assembly line’ to produce several bowers. Each person has one/two tasks they perform to build the product and passes it on to the next person which builds towards the finished product.
