If tying knots and string is too fiddly for your clients then try strips of ribbon and use glue to fix on your natural materials - ordinary pva glue or a glue gun would work well . Extra time is required to allow the glue to dry before affixing the ribbons to your stick hanger.
Decorating homes with greenery at Christmas has a long history: Bringing in greenery such as holly, ivy and evergreen branches to decorate churches and home at Christmas can be traced back to the Middle Ages. And advent wreaths can be found in the 1500’s in Germany , so our current natural Christmas decorations have their roots in centuries long tradition, see https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/learn/histories/christmas-greenery-history/
