We are thrilled to announce that Alan Bell, a renowned figure in the field of horticulture and founding chair of Trellis, has become a patron of the charity. With a rich background in gardening and community engagement, Alan is set to bring a wealth of experience and passion to Trellis, the charity that focuses on the transformative power of gardening for people facing various challenges. Alan discovered a love for plants after an apprenticeship with Edinburgh Council ignited a lifelong passion for horticulture. Over the years, he has worked at a variety of inspirational locations, including Culzean Castle and Holyrood Palace, and contributed significantly to community gardening initiatives through founding Community Gardening Projects Scotland. As a project advisor for the Society for Horticultural Therapy (now Thrive), and as Chair of the Board for Trellis, Alan was instrumental in promoting the therapeutic benefits of gardening. This commitment was just as much in evidence in his role with the South Edinburgh Social Inclusion Partnership, where he led efforts in environmental regeneration, including revitalising Burdiehouse Burn Valley Park. This work resulted in Alan becoming the Parks and Gardens Manager for the City of Edinburgh Council and then their Greenspace Manager. Alan commented, “As a founding member of Trellis, I’m truly honoured to become a patron of this incredible charity. Gardening has the power to heal, inspire, and connect us all, and I’ve witnessed firsthand how nurturing plants can transform lives. I look forward to supporting the amazing work being done to help individuals thrive through the power of nature.” With Alan’s extensive background and dedication to horticulture and community engagement, Trellis is set to enhance its impact on people and communities alike, fostering growth and healing through gardening and nature.
